The COLOR Series:
The power of color in your life is dynamic. Color affects you physically, and emotionally. Finding the right color to put in the right place is very important to build a safe and energetic environment that expresses you and gives you peace of mind and connection to your living and working space.
Not to mention it looks awesome! An energetic space connected to you brings more harmony, prosperity, and overall good stuff into your life! Our color this week is:
BLACK: The CORE Color
Ok, I can hear some of you screaming, “Black is not a color.” Of course you are right. Black is not really a color, in fact it is the absence of color, the absence of light. The reason I want to start here is because black is a very powerful tool in your design. In your mind black may represent void and darkness…but maybe there is more! I recently heard something really cool about black. Black represents the center of the earth where there is no light. We are all connected to the earth and being connected to the center of the earth is really powerful. Ever wondered why everyone in New York wears black? Other than the obvious fashion statement, it connects people to the core of the earth. It is a possible unconscious effort to connect to the earth and nature while living in a concrete jungle. Pretty cool, huh? We all have a direct tie to the earth and nature and even if you are not aware of it. Nature pulls you in, like gravity. That is the reason I am starting with black. It has lots of power in your environment.
Even though black is not considered a color, I will treat it as one when it comes to incorporating it into your space. So, use black as a grounding color and you will see how it does just that in your environment. Realistically a complete black room would be overwhelming, but the use of black in the right places creates contrast, drama, and ultimately grounds the space. Basically, every room should have some black in it somewhere. It can be as engulfing as black on the walls and as simple as a touch of black on cabinet knobs and hardware. From the grandest display, to a pop here and there, black can pull the room together visually.

Black works great with every color and color scheme…soft colors, neutrals, bold colors, grays, and bright colors. Sleek lines and the richness of black leather couches set against metals and geometrics create the high tech modern look in the contemporary setting. The light muted colors of the cottage style come alive with pops of black thrown in. Using black on the legs of farm tables or bringing in wrought iron enhances the comfortable, homey feel of the cottage or a beach house. When using bright and bold colors like yellow, orange, green or red, adding black lampshades, black picture frames, pillows or iron work create the contrast and strength to offset the boldness of the intense color. Black can tone down bold colors and give the eye a place to land. The subtle tones of neutrals can be spiced up with splashes of black to add interest, definition, and drama.

If you find your room a little boring, it just doesn’t feel like it is cohesive, or it could use some drama, look for places you can add the grounding element of black. Remember to use the power of three…three pops of black around the room through fabric, frames, iron, lampshades, furniture, art, or a funky flea market find. So…bring in the grounding power of black to add contrast, drama, and continuity to your room and see it all come together right before your eyes!
